The Digital Revolution & Intelligent Plant Design
How to find the most relevant operational data with the greatest ROI.
Plant design has evolved from a singular function using schematic drawings to an interactive, multi-platform enterprise. The emergence of the digital twin allows designers to simulate operational performance before equipment is installed, resulting in a faster time from design to operation. It also provides a Day 1 operational model that can be used to measure, manage and improve the system throughout its lifecycle.
Engineering Academy will look at the emerging technology and its capabilities in the midst of this digital revolution. We also will examine how the human element places a crucial role in the success of any technological development, as well as how manufacturers of any size can benefit from the digital revolution without having to rip and replace existing systems.

The Value of The Digital Twin
Building a digital twin is one of the most tangible ways to drive digitization, innovation, and realize faster ROI with more resilient business models and processes. Providing real-time information availability, predictability on the shop floor, and data-driven decision-making are crucial to improving efficiency and responding quickly to changing market needs. The Digital Twin provides the flexibility within manufacturing operations like we haven’t seen before…
In this discussion, we will go over real-world examples, implementing Digital Twins and their benefits, and what to expect from a System Integrator throughout the process.

Jose Rivera
CEO
Control System Integrators Association (CSIA)
Jose Rivera has led a successful global career in the automation industry working for Siemens, Emerson Electric and Schneider Electric in six countries, most often in a regional or global role. Since March 2015 he has been the CEO of the Control System Integrators Association (CSIA). In this position he has worked to advance the system integration industry by expanding the adoption of the CSIA Best Practices and by helping members recognize emerging trends and pursue associated business development opportunities. The CSIA Best Practices help independent system integrators build better companies.
Mr. Rivera holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL and Lic (MS) and BS degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Costa Rica. He is fluent in Spanish, English, German, with a basic level of French.

How Digital Twins Bridge The Gap Between Engineering Design And O&M
A digital twin is more than just a visual computer model of an asset. In order to take full advantage of a digital twin, you must be able receive information from multiple sources from operations and maintenance, like data from IoT sensors and historians, in the real system to constantly parallel the system’s state. This is then displayed in context with engineering or reality models to provide a true picture of performance and behavior in an open and connected environment.

Deliver Safe And Functional Factory Automation In A Digital Environment
The evolution of industrial applications involving motorization and electrification provides benefits such as intelligent automation and advanced productivity. Conventional manual work is being replaced with the assistance and interaction of automated equipment. This evolution results in humans getting more exposed to hazards from both machines and actuators; a cause of concern during operation. To reduce the risks of the hazards, there are many functional safety standards which help provide guidance for designing safety systems. One of the functional safety standards, IEC 61800-5-2, defines a safety function called Safe Torque Off (STO).
